We once had someone buy one of our bags, ask for a refund, and send back a satin fake tan bag from a completely different brand — that had clearly been used. We couldn't stop laughing, so we gave them the refund anyway, but if that's not proof satin just isn't cutting it, we don't know what is.

Cotton vs. satin: what's actually better for your tan?

Satin and silky fabrics might look fancy, but they're not doing your tan any favours. Here's why we didn't go there:

Heat: Satin is often made from polyester or other synthetics, which doesn't breathe. That means heat gets trapped against your skin all night — hello, sweaty tan lines.
Moisture: Cotton absorbs sweat instead of leaving it sitting on your skin. Satin just lets it pool, which can make your tan go patchy or streaky.
Grip: Satin is slippery by design (great for your hair, not so great here). It slides around while you sleep, which can actually cause more rubbing and transfer, not less.
Washing: Cotton can handle regular washes at higher temps to properly clean off tan residue. Satin often needs a gentler, cooler wash — which doesn't always cut it.

Basically, satin might feel silky for five minutes before bed, but cotton is what actually gets you through the night — and gives you a better tan the next morning.

Why not just use an old duvet cover?

We've heard this one before.

Some people try sleeping in old clothes, using towels or covering their bedding with an old duvet cover when they fake tan.

And while those tricks might help, they don't solve the problem quite as completely.

To stop your tan rubbing off on itself, you basically have to sleep like a starfish all night — arms and legs stretched out, not touching anything, including yourself. Try staying in that position for eight hours. It doesn't happen.
